Update: Congestion time at the Gotthard is 4.5 hours at 6 p.m
Some are returning from the south, others are only now going on vacation. The result: it is backed up on both sides of the Gotthard tunnel.
The typical short holiday at Easter lasts from Good Friday to Easter Monday. And the typical destination for many German-speaking Swiss: the canton of Ticino and Italy. Every year there is a traffic jam at the Gotthard north portal first on Good Friday and four days later on the other side. So also this year. After the mega traffic jam on Friday at the north portal, the length of the traffic jam at the south portal increased continuously on Monday. On Monday afternoon, the length of the traffic jam was around four kilometers. At half past one in the afternoon the column had already grown to 8 kilometers.
By four o'clock in the afternoon, the traffic jam had grown to 12 kilometers. Towards evening the line of sheet metal continued to grow, the waiting time at 6 p.m. was 4.5 hours according to Viasuisse, just before 8 p.m. there are now 2.5 hours of waiting time. The TCS recommended the alternative route via the A13 and the San Bernardino.
At the same time, however, it is still damming up on the northern side of the Gotthard. Many probably wanted to escape the Good Friday traffic jam and are only now going on vacation. Apparently they still end up in traffic jams. The traffic jam between Amsteg and the Gotthard tunnel was around four kilometers long at noon. At half past one it is already seven kilometers, the loss of time is more than an hour. Here, too, the TCS recommends avoiding the San Bernardino. Already last Friday the waiting time at the Gotthard near Göschenen was up to four hours. This corresponds to a traffic jam length of 22 kilometers. The traffic jam was only longer in 2018, when it was 25 kilometers.
