According to the French news agency AFP, Pierre Adams was 73 years old and had been in a coma for 40 years. In the 1970s, Adams competed in 22 international competitions. During a routine knee operation in 1982, he slipped into a coma due to a mistake made by an anesthetist.

The anesthesiologist was responsible for eight patients that day. Most of the hospital staff was on strike and a trainee was released for Adams. Both were indicted in the 1990s and fined 8 890, including one month in prison. The trainee later said that he was not fully prepared for the job. Adams spent 15 months in hospital, after which his widow, Bernadette, cared for him for the rest of his life.

In 2007, she quoted her husband as saying, "They can feel, they can smell, they can hear, and they can jump when a dog barks, but they can't see." They have two sons. He told the British Broadcasting Corporation in 2016 that the hospital had never apologized to the anesthetist and trainee despite their convictions. Adams was born in 1984 in Dakar.
