The football World Cup2022 finals are being held between November 21 and December 18, a time when temperatures in Qatar typically reach 25 degrees Celsius.

If the play-off stage of the tournament i.e. the final matches were held in June and July, as they usually are, the matches would be played in temperatures above 40C and possibly up to 50C.

Qatar initially proposed holding the final in an air-conditioned indoor stadium during the summer, but the plan was rejected.

What are the problems in holding the Fifa World Cup in winter?

Why was Qatar chosen as the host of the football World Cup?

In 2010, Qatar won the rights to the Fifa World Cup after winning the draw of 22 executive members of FIFA. Qatar outbid the US, South Korea, Japan and Australia. And so Qatar became the first Arab country to host this tournament.

Qatar was accused of paying $3.7 million in bribes to FIFA officials to secure its backing, but Doha was cleared of all charges after a two-year investigation.

FIFA chairman Sepp Blatter at the time supported Qatar's bid but has since said FIFA may have made the wrong decision.

Sepp Blatter is currently on trial in Switzerland for fraud, embezzlement and other corruption charges he denies.
