Police scanner chatter indicated that authorities were investigating many sites in the surrounding area, a suburban enclave about 25 miles north of Chicago. Governor JB Pritzker said he "provided all state resources" to assist the community, with state police and Chicago Police Department officers on the scene. The Lake County Sheriff's Office warned the public to avoid the area near the Highland Park shooting.

A witness told Chicago-based WGN-TV News he heard about 15 shots as he grabbed his 4-year-old son and fled the area. He said the gunman crouched in a "very militarized manner" and opened fire methodically, according to witnesses.Video shared to the Citizens app showed at least one police helicopter circling near the parade route.
